Treatment Methods For People With Gum Disease

Hope for People with Gum Disease

More than 50% of Australians over the age of 65 are affected by moderate to a severe gun disease called periodontitis. This disease is often difficult to treat, requiring regular professional cleaning, oral antibiotics and at times extensive surgery. It is the most common cause of bad breath and will lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Extensive research over the last 15 years established that periodontitis is linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Working alongside Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL), the Melbourne University research team developed a world first vaccine by targeting enzymes produced by bacterium most commonly found in deep gum disease. The vaccine has passed preliminary trials and hopefully could be available before 2022 which would improve quality of life for millions of people.

Regular 3-6 monthly professional cleaning and adequate oral hygiene are still the best way to stop the progression of periodontal disease. Please talk to us if you suffer from bad breath, loose drifting teeth or bleeding gums so we can diagnose and treat your gum condition.
