Children’s Dentistry near Fitzroy North

At Boroondara Family Dentist, we provide gentle, respectful dental care for children of all ages. Our aim is to teach children good oral habits so that they can have a healthy mouth for life. Through the Child Dental Benefits Scheme, Medicare provides $1000 of dental care over a 2-year period for eligible children.

Dental care is really important for children. Instances of decay among children are on the rise in Australia. In 2010, 55% of 6-year-olds had experienced decay in their baby teeth and 48% of 12-year-olds had experienced decay in their permanent teeth.

Dentistry for infants and toddlers

Some form of oral hygiene should start as soon as early baby teeth come through, usually in the first 4-8 months. You should be starting dental visits when your child is 12-18 months old, as some children may have already developed decay by then and habits, like thumb sucking, can affect the health and alignment of teeth.

Dentistry for pre-school and early school children

During check-ups, we make sure teeth are coming through properly and, if necessary, apply fissure sealants—a protective layer that is applied to the molars—to reduce the risk of tooth decay. We are also able to make an assessment on whether early orthodontic intervention might be beneficial. If it is required, we refer to specialists as we believe they will provide better care.

Teens

In early teens, we look for ways to prevent caries (decay) and gum disease, and also mould mouthguards for sport. Energy, sport and soft drinks can cause acid erosion, and piercings—of the tongue and lips—have the potential to damage teeth. With teenage children, we continue to make orthodontic and wisdom teeth assessments, and teach proper flossing and brushing techniques.
